Although details surrounding the agreement remain scarce, investors welcomed the prospect of reduced geopolitical tensions, pushing the Dow Jones 0.92% higher to a fresh record close of 51,671. The broader S&P 500 gained 1.65% to finish at 7,554, while the technology-heavy Nasdaq outperformed with a 3.07% surge to 26,683.

Despite the improvement in risk appetite, other markets were somewhat less enthusiastic. The US dollar index edged 0.11% lower to 99.65, while Treasury yields drifted lower as traders continued to assess the implications of the deal and look ahead to tomorrow’s Fed meeting. The yield on the 2-year Treasury note fell 1.5 basis points to 4.066%, while the benchmark 10-year yield slipped 0.6 basis points to 4.473%.

Energy markets reacted sharply to the prospect of shipping flows normalising through the Strait of Hormuz. Brent crude tumbled 4.41% to $83.48 a barrel, while WTI crude fell 4.87% to $80.75, with both contracts falling to their lowest levels in three months as traders priced out some of the geopolitical risk premium that had been supporting prices.

Gold once again defied its traditional safe-haven relationship, surging 2.06% to $4,305.83 an ounce despite the strong rally in equities and easing tensions in the Middle East. The move higher suggests investors remain cautious and continue to seek diversification amid uncertainty over the broader economic outlook.

FOMC Meeting to Attract Trader Attention

The Federal Open Market Committee starts its first meeting under the leadership of Kevin Warsh today, and traders are expecting plenty of volatility in the market around the rate call late in the day tomorrow. They are widely expected to keep rates on hold in the 3.50%-3.75% range, but markets are expecting volatility to come from the forward guidance that the committee gives with regard to rates, given the recent data updates. CPI inflation data pushed to its highest level in three years on last month’s reading, and the jobs market has proved very resilient, with the last Non-Farm Payroll update smashing expectations. Markets are now favouring a hike as the Fed’s next move in rates, while the new Chair will undoubtedly be under pressure from the White House to ease rates, and this is what makes the message crucial from this meeting. Add to the mix the fact that we will see the ‘dot plots’ predicting Fed members’ rate expectations this month as well, and the recipe is there for some big moves in the market around the event.

Central Banks in Focus Today

Attention now shifts away from geopolitics, at least temporarily, and back towards central banks in the sessions ahead today. The Bank of Japan is set to announce its latest interest rate decision and hold its press conference during today’s Asian session, and as usual, no time has been set, but it is expected to be around Tokyo lunchtime. The bank is fully expected to raise rates by 25 basis points to 1.00%; however, traders are expecting plenty of volatility in the yen around the forward guidance given by Kazuo Ueda and team. The Reserve Bank of Australia will deliver its policy decision during the Sydney session at 2:30 pm AEST, where they are expected to keep rates on hold following three hikes this year, and once again traders are expecting volatility from the statement and Governor Bullock’s press conference at 3:30 pm. There is little else on the calendar for the rest of the trading day, and so geopolitical headlines are expected to continue to dominate market sentiment, with traders likely to remain highly sensitive to any further developments surrounding the US-Iran peace agreement.

Explore all upcoming market events in the Economic Calendar.

[463
