News that a US helicopter was downed in the Gulf and subsequent retaliatory strikes from US forces have placed markets on alert into the Asian session today.

The Dow Jones managed to edge higher, gaining 0.17% to close at 50,872, while the broader S&P 500 slipped 0.26% to finish at 7,386. Technology stocks bore the brunt of the selling pressure, with the Nasdaq falling 0.97% to 25,678 as investors trimmed exposure to growth sectors ahead of today’s inflation figures.

In fixed-income markets, Treasury yields moved lower as traders awaited fresh clues on the Federal Reserve’s policy outlook. The US 2-year Treasury yield fell 4.4 basis points to 4.118%, while the benchmark 10-year yield declined 4.6 basis points to 4.516%. The softer yield environment weighed slightly on the US dollar, with the US Dollar Index easing 0.05% to 99.94.

Commodity markets were also under pressure despite ongoing geopolitical uncertainty. Oil prices dropped to their lowest levels in seven weeks, suggesting traders remain more focused on concerns surrounding demand and supply dynamics than the potential for an escalation in Middle East tensions. Brent crude fell 2.56% to settle at $91.84 per barrel, while WTI crude declined 2.85% to $88.70 per barrel.

Gold also moved lower, with the precious metal falling 1.60% to $4,259.45 per ounce. The decline leaves gold trading near an important technical support zone heading into what could be a pivotal session for markets.

US Inflation Data to Push Fed Hikes

There are two key US inflation prints this week that look like they could be pushing the Fed into rate hikes sooner than they would like from a political perspective. New Chairman Kevin Warsh was brought in by President Trump on the back of a dovish outlook for rates, but the energy crisis and strong US data, including Friday’s stronger employment numbers, may now force the new man in the hot seat to turn much more hawkish. Today’s headline CPI data is expected to show a 0.5% month-on-month increase and a lofty 4.2% year-on-year increase, with the core numbers coming in slightly lower, at a 0.3% month-on-month increase and 2.9% year-on-year increase. If they come in near expectations or higher, some in the market feel we may see a 25-basis-point hike as soon as September. Thursday’s PPI numbers could lock in those views if they come in above expectations as well; however, today’s CPI print is expected to be more impactful. The dollar is now trading within striking distance of annual highs, and a stronger number, or even one that meets expectations, could see new highs for the year in the coming days.

US Inflation Data and Rate Calls Ahead Today

The macroeconomic calendar at last kicks into gear for the week today, although we do have to wait until the final session of the day. The New York session starts with US CPI inflation data due early in the day, expected to be the week’s most significant market-moving event. Later in the session, focus moves north of the border to Canada, where the Bank of Canada will announce its latest interest rate decision, accompanied by its Rate Statement, followed by the Governor’s press conference 45 minutes later. The Bank is expected to keep interest rates on hold at 2.25%; however, updates in the Statement and the subsequent press conference are likely to see volatility increase in the loonie, especially in light of recent moves in the oil price.

With inflation data and central bank decisions on the agenda, traders should expect heightened volatility across currencies, equities, bonds, and commodities during the North American session.

Explore all upcoming market events in the Economic Calendar.

[463
