I don&#8217;t think any central bank wants to make a move to begin easing rates and then realize maybe they moved too early, inflation ticks back up, and then they have to raise rates again. I think that that would be a policy mistake. That would be one factor that might actually lead to recession.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.icmarkets.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/image-128.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"329\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Moody\u2019s Analytics produces a world map in which it identifies countries at risk of recession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Right now it believes Russia, Taiwan and New Zealand are in recession, with much of Europe, Canada, Australia and the United States at risk of recession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While Moody\u2019s Analytics puts the US and Europe at risk of recession, Mr Cochrane says strong labour markets in both regions are a factor in staving off a downturn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>It wouldn&#8217;t take much if some shock came along to knock either economy into recession, but as long as we can avoid that shock, we should be able to slip through pretty well and continue this modest growth through this year.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image following Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.icmarkets.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/image-131.png\"><img couldn\u2019t insure the shipment above the $65 price point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moody\u2019s Analytics\u2019 long term forecast for the price of oil is about $70 per barrel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure and remains high in almost every country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFood is a smaller piece of the overall budget, but for lower income households, lower income countries, it&#8217;s really important. And that&#8217;s the fear right now, is that those countries will face a longer period of inflation just because food is a bigger component,\u201d&nbsp;said Cochrane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.icmarkets.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/image-134.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.icmarkets.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/image-134-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-64131\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.icmarkets.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/image-134-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.icmarkets.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/image-134-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.icmarkets.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/image-134-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/www.icmarkets.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/image-134.png 1153w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Oxford Economics identifies one of the key risks for global inflation is food prices which have the potential to be impacted by the El Nino weather pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration puts the chance of an El Nino event at 90% this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That would cause hot and dry weather, particularly in South and Southeast Asia.
