Markets Update:

Asian stocks ended flat to slightly lower on Tuesday as climbing Covid-19 cases in emerging economies including India and Brazil dented hopes for a swift global economic recovery. Traders also awaited the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy announcement and Chairman Jerome Powell’s comments on the economy for directional cues.

Chinese shares ended little changed even as official data showed profits at China’s industrial firms nearly doubled in March from a year ago. Mainland Chinese stocks nudged higher on the day, with the Shanghai composite traded flat while the Shenzhen component advanced 0.3%.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 fell 0.5% while the Topix index declined by 0.8%. Australian markets fell but ended well off their day’s lows amid renewed concerns over a surge in coronavirus cases in countries like India, Japan and Brazil.

Australian markets fell but ended well off their day’s lows amid renewed concerns over a surge in coronavirus cases in countries like India, Japan and Brazil. Oil rebounded after top oil producers stood by their demand forecasts, but there are still downside risks due to surging COVID-19 cases in India, the world’s third-biggest oil importer.
